Thesis - Graphic Design and Divine Proportion: Inherent Ability to Perceive

Statement

Humans are unique in their ability to rationally observe sense, perceive, and think. Through organization of collective patterns, decisions are made accordingly. The purpose of this study is to research the nature of observation and the resulting collections of patterned information as it pertains to digital design.

Abstract

This written thesis and accompanying artistic project investigates Divine Proportion in an effort to understand how we perceive. The Divine Proportion seems to pop up everywhere in nature: being seen in the arrangement of petals on a flower, DNA, the cornea of our eye, snowflakes, diamond crystals, a nautilus shell, the star we spin around, the galaxy we spiral within, the air we breathe. As the investigation proceeds into this mystery of perception and Divine Proportion other aspects will be expounded upon: the principles of Gestalt and Jung’s Collective Unconscious to show the interconnectedness of life through the interconnectedness of patterns and shapes in our environment and how we perceive them.I plan to show that it is a natural inherent phenomenon for us to group patterns in order to recognize structure in our universe. Patterns are the foundation for everything around us; the question is how do we perceive these patterns?
